DALANG

Underpinning Balinese culture, art ritual and daily social interactions exists a Balinese Hindu concept, rwa bhineda. Literally meaning ‘two opposites’, it is a philosophy of balance between two opposing, yet intrinsically connected forces of good and evil; a balance that needs to be maintained to bring about cosmic balance and harmony to the universe.
Far distanced from Western notions of a battle between good and evil, this Balinese concept of duality accepts negative and demonic forces as a humbling and inherent part of life, not something to be feared, but to be as respected as positive, divine forces.
Here exists a great game of careful cosmic balancing, woven intrinsically into daily life in Bali, wherein ritual daily practices such as offerings and dance become the means to maintain a harmonious coexistence between two dualistic, potent, and necessary forces.
